In May of 1984 Dr. Amy Patterson joined Dr. Neil Shipman at the Highlands Animal Clinic. Because the clinic served both small towns of Highlands and Cashiers, NC, they decide to open a satellite office in Cashiers, the Cashiers Animal Clinic, to serve those living in the Cashiers area. During the summer months Dr. Shipman and Dr. Patterson split their time between the two offices. Dr. Patterson kept the Highlands office open through the winter of 1985 providing the area with year round veterinary service for the first time.

In August of 1985 Dr. Patterson’s younger sister Cookie, a licensed veterinary technician, joined the practice.

In the summer of 1986, Dr. Shipman and Dr. Patterson decided that they could better serve both communities by working out of one office. They built a new facility on Highway 64 between Highlands and Cashiers and became the Highlands-Cashiers Animal Clinic. The doors of the new office first open in January of 1987. Dr. Shipman retired in the fall of1987.

Today Dr. Patterson and her sister still continue to work out of the office on highway 64. They have provided almost 30 years of year round veterinary care to the communities of Highlands and Cashiers.
